Manual Osteopathy is covered by most extended health plans. Please check with your health insurance company to confirm that your plan includes Osteopathic Treatments. There are variations in coverage even with the same Insurance Company. Cheryl is a member of OOAMA, if your plan covers Osteopathy a receipt will be provided so that you can submit to your Insurance provider. Most major extended health Insurance providers have an established relationship with OOAMA and accept their members as qualified providers. At this time, only Green Shield members can benefit by Direct billing & Benefit eligibility at Back In Balance Health Centre. We are hoping soon the other Insurance companies will approve Manual Osteopaths to direct bill. Many clients that do not have Insurance coverage value the advantages of Manual Osteopathic Treatments and pay out of pocket. If this is your situation, we can tailor a treatment plan within your financial and health requirements. Regrettably Back In Balance Health Centre does not accept WSIB claims.
The techniques of OMT itself is painless, although sometimes after Mobilizations and Muscle Energy techniques, tenderness can occur like after a workout at the gym, as these muscles are not used to being used. The discomfort should last for 2-3 days post therapy. Hot packs can be applied post treatment to help ease the stiffness and aches. Your take home stretches that your therapist may have prescribed to you is also beneficial to help your body adjust to its new positions.
Chiropractors typically work mainly with the spine and spend typically 10-15 mins per visit using a quick assessment. Chiropractors generally use a Grade 5 mobilization which is HVLA (high velocity, low amplitude) adjustment. An Osteopathic Manual Practitioner spends generally an hour using gentle pressure techniques using a Grade 4 mobilization or lower depending on your preference and end range of motion in your joints and muscles. We stay within the maximum range of motion.
OMT was first developed by Andrew Still in 1874. Dr. Still avoided the use of drugs and search for alternative treatments instead. He believed that as a physician, his role was to facilitate the inherent ability of the body to heal itself. He developed Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and a philosophy of medicine based on his experience. His motto was “Function Governs Structure” thus promoting the body’s ability to heal and regulate itself.
No, you do not need to consult your medical doctor prior to visiting a Manual Osteopathic Practitioner. Some Insurance providers may require a referral for Osteopathic Treatment to be covered. Please check your policy for details.
